How and when did the two of you meet?

The first time we met, I [Abbi] was at a sleep over with some friends. One of their brothers had surprised them by coming home earlier than expected and picked them up, and that brother happened to be Luke. He was wearing a ‘Bullet for My Valentine’ shirt that made my heart flutter and all I could ask was “do you listen to Bullet for My Valentine?” It wasn’t until about 2 years later when I’d moved home from Brisbane that I met Luke again and we connected, which got us to where we are now.

Tell us all about your proposal story:

We had planned a couples photoshoot for our 3 year anniversary with our photographer and friend, Kate, who took us to some beautiful locations all around Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast hinterland. There were location changes, outfit changes, and hair changes brought on by the weather. There were times where Luke would get super shaky and raspy with his breathing, I would ask if he was okay to which he replied “yeah I’m good”. Nothing happened during the photos, but when we were walking along the riverbank to get something for dinner, Luke stopped me and said “Babe, you know I love you”. I remember replying “Aw babe I love you too!”. He stopped me again and said “No, I mean I really love you” and got on one knee and proposed.

What does marriage mean to you?

For both of us it means spending the rest of our lives with our best friend, sharing the good and the bad times, and coming out together.

Why did you choose Hideaway Weddings?

Neither of us have been to a wedding in our adult lives and we didn’t know where to start. Seeing the all-inclusive package Hideaway Weddings provided helped ease some worries we had, especially as we were planning a wedding while living 7 hours away. They had every tip & trick listed and ready to help, even down to details of what should be included in speeches. They provided so many recommendations for vendors and suppliers, and were always happy to help with any questions we had.

Describe your theme for the day and the inspiration behind it:

We were after something non-traditional, as we aren’t very traditional people. The theme was somewhere along the lines of “moody romantic” – think dark tones and moody lighting, but still breathtaking.

Did you incorporate any traditions or perhaps do something a little different?

We didn’t do a garter toss, bouquet toss, or wedding favours. We thought these were things that weren’t really necessary for us.

Tell us about your dress:
I could never see myself in a more “traditional” type of dress, my typical style is dark or plain tones – black, white and red basically. I went to a few boutiques to get an idea of what style I liked, as I was going to order a black dress online in a style I liked. When I got to White Lily Couture, I got the best consultant I could ask for! When asked what I wanted from my dress, I said “I want some sparkle. There’s this beautiful tree with fairy lights at the venue that I want photos of at night”, and Milly pulled out “Kendall” by Zavana Couture. I honestly thought I was going to hate it, but as soon as I put it on, especially when we went into the sun I knew it was the one! The neckline, how easy it was to move in, and being covered in glitter were the biggest sellers for me!

Abbi’s highlight of the day:

Getting to the venue and seeing it all set up, with the most perfect weather, and seeing Luke’s face as I came out the door to walk down the aisle.

Luke’s highlight of the day

Seeing Abbi walk down the aisle. Signing the papers to officially make her my wife. Getting a moment to ourselves for the first dance.

Any tips or words of wisdom?

– Don’t let anyone else’s opinion stop you from doing the things YOU want the most, unless it is utterly ridiculous.
– Don’t go beyond your financial means, however you can always look for bargains if you’ve splurged elsewhere.
