How and when did the two of you meet?

We first met 13 years ago, working at our highschool jobs in retail. Rhiain worked the lay-by counter, and Chris was in customer service. Very romantic – true love under florescent lights! It took Rhiain about a year to work up the courage to actually speak to Chris, but from then on we were inseparable.

Tell us all about your proposal story

We spent the day at the Brisbane Botanical Gardens. They had a massive, limited-time sunflower installation – which is Rhiain’s favourite flower.

It was a horribly hot and humid day, and it took us entirely too long to find the flowers. And to make things even better, it started bucketing down with rain not long after we found the sunflowers. Luckily, we brought an umbrella, and decided to hold up where we were.

We were surrounded by sunflowers, huddled under Rhiain’s teddy bear umbrella to shield us from the rain. Chris was already crouched down on one knee, half-soaked, and popped the question then and there. So it was kind of fitting that our ceremony was spent surrounded by sunflowers, under umbrellas, and with a perfectly wistful amount of rain.

What does marriage mean to you?

Rhiain: Marriage, to me, just means being there for them. Supporting them more than anyone else ever could. I want to be there for Chris when he’s stressed about work, celebrating his birthday, when he’s taking up a new hobby, even when he wants to go to Bunnings for the 5th time that week. I believe in him and know he supports me just as much.

Chris: I think a big part of it is making sure you’re the best you can be, so you can help your partner be the best they can be. Supporting each other in individual and shared goals, and trusting that you both have each other’s best interest at heart.

Why did you choose Hideaway Weddings?

Rhiain: I wasn’t very interested in taking years to plan a big fancy wedding, so the first thing that drew me into Hideaway was that they had everything sorted out (ceremony, reception, suppliers etc). What made us choose The Hideaway was how friendly and professional Melissa and Amanda were, how beautiful the grounds were, and how comfortable we felt there.

Chris: Out of every venue we looked at, The Hideaway was the only one we didn’t need to make internal compromises for – it really fit what we had in mind for our wedding. The venue was great, the decor options were tasteful and flexible, and the staff were super friendly. The all-inclusive nature of the package meant we could cut down on the number of decisions we needed to make, the research involved, and the stress of coordinating it. We were easily able to trust in the quality of the recommended suppliers, and just let the professionals do what they do best. We only really needed to focus on the things that were specifically important to us.

Describe your theme for the day and the inspiration behind it:

Rhiain: I had read online some helpful tips on how to plan a wedding and one of them was to each pick 3 things we felt were most important to the day. Mine were: a photo booth, flowers and good vibes. With major emphasis on the good vibes! We really wanted a fun party for everyone to enjoy. Chris’ 3 things were good music, good vibes and flowers. I think everything we had in mind came to fruition bigger and better than we hoped for – thanks to the Hideaway!

We also wanted the day to be as simple and as fun as possible, so we thought it would be best to not have any bridal party. So I can certainly recommend this for future couples!

What were the highlights of your day for you?

Chris: Seeing my beautiful wife Rhiain walking down the isle. Her, and looking around seeing how happy everyone else was too, it was perfect. And later on, standing back and seeing the family having the best time on the dance floor – so many smiles, and hugs, and moves. It was so good.

Rhiain: Definitely the vows! I still get all warm inside when I think of them.

Any tips or words of wisdom to offer other couples?

Don’t stress! It’s your day and you can do whatever you want to do. Also remember to breathe, ask for help when you need it, and enjoy all the moments together as a newly married couple. It will go really fast so spend a few seconds to take in what is happening.

Did you enjoy a honeymoon? If so, how and why did you choose your destination?

Yes! For years my dream was for us to go to Hawaii, however due to travel restrictions, we chose to visit Cairns. I’m so happy we did! It’s a beautiful place. The fresh smell in the air, the tropical trees, the warm weather, everything about it has been amazing.
